Creating radiant landscapes in watercolour by Catherine Beale.
Capturing Light is a must for artists who want to explore the subtle qualities of light, focusing on creating dramatic and imaginative landscapes.
With her love for the fluid nature of watercolour, Catherine has developed her own painting technique by experimenting with modern pigments and pushing the boundaries of the medium. The method, which she calls “gravity painting”, involves using plenty of water on a sloping board, creating a natural way of working that keeps colours luminous and fluid – without any muddiness.
The book begins with an explanation of the technique, the materials and colours used, and the importance of capturing the essence of a landscape. It includes numerous exercises of increasing difficulty, demonstrations and inspiring finished works that highlight the captivating effects of reflections, mist and shadows, as well as the dramatic variations of different skies.
As the book progresses, ideas for landscape compositions and nine projects are introduced, showing how to build up light-filled effects. Catherine’s method will help you free up your painting style, strengthen your colour choices and create vibrant artworks filled with dramatic light.
